About Kumon Math & Reading Centers
Kumon was developed in 1954, in Japan, by a teacher named Toru Kumon, who wanted his son Takeshi to develop a love for learning. His goal was to thoroughly prepare his son for the rigorous high school and college entry exams. With short, incremental daily assignments that required mastery before proceeding, Takeshi progressed and his abilities improved significantly. Other parents took notice of these results, and the Kumon Method was born. Today, Kumon has helped millions of children gain academic advantage.
Kumon is the world’s largest after-school math and reading enrichment program that has enrolled over 16 million children since its inception over 60 years ago. Founded by Toru Kumon, a high school math teacher who set out to create study aids in order to help his son excel academically, the program works to increase self-learning, confidence, and overall academic independence in children.
Currently, there are nearly 25,000 learning centers in operation across 55 countries and regions working continually to unlock the full potential of those enrolled. Serving children from preschool through high school, the Kumon Method uses an individualized approach that is designed to accelerate the development of advanced math and reading skills. Many children enrolled in Kumon come out of the program studying well beyond their grade level, resulting in a brighter future for us all as they grow and advance into shaping the world.
What happens as kids advance through the Kumon Math and Reading Program?
They develop traits for success such as resilience, perseverance, and vision. No other program creates the same critical lifelong success habits. It’s habits like these that have parents enrolling multiple kids and telling friends and family about their kids’ success.
